W16 Taos Art & Literature

You don't have to be an Art or Literature major to appreciate the rich diversity of Southwestern culture this interim.

Students will interact with contemporary artists and storytellers in Taos, New Mexico and the surrounding area while visiting art galleries and studios.

In this course, Professor Naranjo-Huebl encourages students to find their mode of creative expression while exploring the Southwestern atmosphere that has inspired so many artists and storywriters.

"Taos is the perfect combination of art and narrative. I don't know anyone who isn't an artists in Taos. The people encourage art in everyone," said Naranjo-Huebl.

Taos (rhyming with "house") is an international art colony with the most art galleries per square capita in the world.

Because the area is so ethnically diverse, students will experience the intersection of Native American, Mexican American, and Anglo American cultures where they work and live; for example, day trips will include visiting pueblos and larger cities like Albuquerque.

"The interim is ideal because students encounter foreign cultures without paying double the tuition to travel overseas. I am excited for my students to discover taht we are all artists because we are all made in the image of The Artist."
